Darnell Hillman, nicknamed “Dr. Dunk,” played for the Indiana Pacers of the American Basketball Association (ABA) starting in 1971. He helped the team win back-to-back championships (1972 and 1973) but is probably better known as one of the sports most prolific dunkers. In 1977, he won the NBA’s first-ever slam dunk contest, though that wasn’t pro basketball’s first such exhibition. Hillman also famously war the “Bottle Shoppe” jersey at that 1977 competition.
