The World Football League (WFL) kicked off in July of 1974 as a rival to the established National Football League (NFL). At first, it seemed like it would be a serious rival to the NFL. After all, league founder Gary Davidson had already formed the American Basketball Association (ABA) to rival the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the World Hockey Association (WHA) to challenge the National Hockey League (NHL). While both of those leagues struggled, they played for several seasons. One of the ways the WFL tried to distinguish itself was by using a gold football for its first season.
